All trainees in our Teacher Training Program come to the U.S. to gain professional experience and learn about American education system through on-the-job training as cooperating teachers in primary and secondary schools. Also, all of them are required to pass our multi-stage English proficiency tests, and they are selected based on individual qualifications, recommendations, personality, enthusiasm, initiative, subject knowledge, application materials, interviews, and availability of matching schools and positions.

They must have earned a degree or professional certificate from an overseas post-secondary academic institution and have at least one year of professional experience in the field of education acquired outside the U.S. Alternatively, if they do not have a degree or certificate, they must have at least five years of professional experience in the field of education acquired outside the U.S.

Trainees are permitted to receive training in American schools for up to 18 months (depending on each individual cases).

Host schools are not required to pay compensation for the first six months.  The trainee come with round-trip airline tickets, medical insurance, complete background check, and their own housing and transportation. If the schools would like to keep the trainee for another semester beyond the first 6 months, school can keep him/her by offering compensation commensurate with the work they provide.

If the host school chooses to pay compensation for any reason, the trainee must be informed that they are obligated to pay the regular federal, state, and city income tax. Trainees are not required to pay any withholdings for Social Security, Medicare, and Federal Unemployment Tax. 

Interns and trainees come covered with a health insurance policy for the duration of their program that meets or exceeds the following minimum coverage requirements set forth by the U.S. federal regulations for the J-1 program - Subpart A-- General Provisions (§62.14 Insurance)

   * The deductible per accident or illness cannot exceed $500

Trainees are to find their own housing. The host school and KoAm can be of assistance in finding housing options in the neighborhood. Each trainee must inform KoAm of his or her US residential address upon arrival in the US and inform KoAm whenever residential information changes during the program.

Trainees are required to pay for any travel costs to, from, and during the program. Additionally, we encourage trainees to travel locally during holidays and their grace periods in the US. For international travels, they must contact KoAm at least 2-3 weeks prior to departure so that the program sponsor can sign and return the travel validation on the DS2019 form. This will allow them to re-enter the US on the J-1 visa.

Trainees are responsible for all personal expenses, e.g. housing, travel, entertainment, income tax, etc., while on the program.
